We had a game on Sunday and I just need some clarification on a rule. Before the ball is snapped and a receiver goes offside, if we tag him while offside is the play dead? We were told, "It 'technically' is a rule but what ref would call that?" Not to mention the yelling that was involved. Thanks to whoever eases my mind on this.

From my understanding and I what I would call is that if the receiver crosses the line of scrimmage and goes into the defensive secondary while the center is holding on to the ball and the defending team touches the offside player it is an offside penality, If the offside player makes it back to the line of scrimmage and is not touched by any player and the center has not snapped the ball then their is no infraction. Do not touch the center otherwise both teams will be offside.

here is another rule that everyone should be made aware of because it has come up a few times this year and is confusing in the WTFL.

Case: The ball carrier is running down field but falls in front of the chasing defender. The defender’s hand passes over
the fallen player but does not make contact.

Ruling: There is no longer a rule to award a touch for a hand passing over a fallen player. There is a specific rule
awarding a touch but only for jumping over a fallen player. Therefore no touch is awarded and the fallen player can get
back up and continue running.

also if you have any other questions about certain rules there are a few case files on this website http://www.tfont.com/offcr.htm that might help those players who think they know something or maybe are mis-informed about certain rules. it is the ontario touchfootball league website.

There is also a video explaining pass interference that you lower division "superstar" :)receivers should watch so you understand what is and what is not PI. So many guys in the lower divisions get bumped and start to freak out crying the blues about what they think is an infraction but actually is not.

sorry for the sarcasmn but everyone should watch the video a few times to understand what we are suppose to call as referee's.

the path is http://www.tfont.com/TFO%20Website%202k5%20and%20on/Templates/Officials%20and%20rules.htm

the video is oldschool and 12 minutes long but it should help.

I hope you're not referring to the commentary on the video when you say oldschool........

I didn't mean that 86 finals video ;) that commentating was mint, howard cosell couldn't of done it better. I mean it's that really old referee video where every player is wearing Gary Grant 1970 style old school addias shorts and one guy is wearing leg warmers, it has that cheesy 80's porn music... (Wait... did I just sucker u all into watching an old direct to VHS video that Laping starred in as a poor university student trying to make money.... oh wait I didn't see a goat in that one )

I guess I just think if it is a rule even if it is an offside penality, then it should have been called. I really think that the ref shouldn't have said that it is "technically" a rule if infact it is a rule.

You're right. It is a rule and it should be called correctly. Send your complaint directly to Todd Rhoden. He'll take it up with the referee in question.

After watching the video, I have a question:

A few games ago one of our defenders was called for screening. He was running with the receiver and did not look back to the ball, but he did not put his hands up either. They were at his side. I argued that it was not screening because his hands were down, but the call was not reversed. What is the correct call?

You didn't say what the defender did in regards to the offensive player? You admit that he didn't look back to the ball, did he obstruct the recievers view of the ball with his body? maybe he was 6'4 and the receiver 5'6? - just as an example for arguments sake (you don't have to just put your hands up to screen) the ball could hit you in the back or the foot etc, but the key is that you do definitely have to make an effort to look back to the ball in the air.

Here is one part of the rule:

If the player is not playing the ball and extends the arms or waves a hand in an attempt to distract a receiver or block the vision of the receiver or to touch the ball that the player is considered to have committed PI in the remote area, if the ball is touched or IF THE RECEIVER'S DIRECT LINE OF VISION IS BLOCKED, it is considered to be pass interference in the target area.

just some insight on the what might of happened.

Thanks. I was just curious because of the example in the video where they show a penalty for screening when the defender's hands are up, and no penalty when he keeps his hands down.

You guys must have nothing better to do than this goofy stuff. I will bring out the monkeys to straighten this out.
