The times they are a changin. It has been discussed among the wise old sages of the Touch football world, that Winnipeg's old Spring Tournament be brought back. The WTFL New Millenium Summer Tournament, June 20 , 21, 22, 2008
So, for the first time in the new millenium, we are going to host a two province Summer tournament. Research has confirmed interest in a woman's division, and an Elite Division.
If there is interest in either a rec or Intermediate, it would be considered based on demand. Entry fee is $300.00, and would include a minimum 3 games,(your pool) and then up to three playoff games.
The entry deadline will be June 16, midnite. Late entries may be considered, but will be subject to a $25.00/day late fee.
Prize money will be awarded to the finalists in each division.
Tournament action involves a progressive opportunity to play new and different teams. While the current state of touch football in the Prairies is satisfactory, it is stagnating. The concept of tournament play is that it exposes teams to new styles of play, and players. Teams learn new defences, or how to play special players. Offences get to test their efficiency vs. new bodies. If they are good, the offence has to sharpen up.
Many years ago the Winnipeg Spring Tournament featured up to 21 teams in different divisions competing for top prizes. Beer gardens, a social, and post tournament party were among the hilites of the event. Winnipeg now has 140 summer teams and 92 Winter teams playing. Many of you already enjoy playing on different or new teams in the many leagues. This is another opportunity, but with the added adventure of out of province teams.
Finally, the wise old sages have noted, that the advent of tournament play, allows for shorter games which increase the intensity of play and the need and urgency of teams to produce. After playing in a tournament or two, it becomes evident that the pace of the game, the productivity, and the efficiency required, increase the team's ability, and that of the individuals as well. A third effect is that, those teams may become competitive on the National stage. Certainly the team improves it's level of play as a result!
Based on the results of the last few years, Winnipeg's top teams have earned the respect of the Nation. The Assassins finsihed 2nd in Canada. Last year the Avengers defeated the Number one team in Canada the Canadians, despite the fact that the Canadians had received multiple extra plays during the last drive of the game in their attempt to comeback. The Avengers in an incredibly heroic, ballsy performance, turned back the Canadians on their goal line. Quite frankly, it seemed like the refs tried to get the Canadians to win, as the Avengers hadd previously stopped the Canadians, way back on the 45 yard line, only to have a mysterious penalty, keep the drive alive.
Of even more significance, was the fact that the Avengers would have never had a chance to be in that position and achieve that wonderful result, unless it was for the Eagles. As rankings go the Province gets ranked spots based on the previous year. Without the Eagles battling that year before, the Avengers would have received either a much tougher "draw" or been relegated to the Intermediate division.
Therefore, the inclusion of tournament play allows our teams to test and measure themselves against other provincial competition. The wise old sages have seen enough of the current stagnating same division teams year after year achieving the same mediocre results.
It's time for a change. Put your best team together, gather $25.00 bucks from each guy, and get entered. In some divisions, the onus will be on strength of competition, and entry will be limited. Therefore get on this asap.
